Arrow of Light

ORDER OF THE ARROW - BRAZOS CHAPTER ARROW OF LIGHT WEBELOS CROSSOVER CEREMONY

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When is the ceremony? What time does it start?

The ceremony starts at 7:30 pm twice a year. (Dec and Feb)

What time do we need to be there?

The Cubmaster (or Webelos den leader) needs to be there by 7 pm so we can get your arrows, check the lists, and make sure all is in order. Only the Cubmaster or WDL may hand off the arrows and the list to the ceremony team.  If we get numerous parents trying to individually hand off these items, it will get confusing and possibly cause delays.

How long will the ceremony last?

About an hour.

Anything we need to bring?

Mom and Dad - Bring your Webelos Scout in full CLASS A uniform with a clearly identified, relatively plain arrow for Akela to use during the ceremony. DO NOT bring the highly decorated keepsake arrow for Akela's use.

Using white paper, type the candidate’s name and pack number in all caps, bold, 12 pt Arial font. Cut out the name and tape the paper on the end of the arrow with the fletching (the feathers), using a strong, clear packing tape. Have pity on Akela - he’s going to be reading this in the near-darkness of a campfire! Example:

TIMMY N. WELL – PACK 1234

If you have more than one Cub in your Pack with the same name, please use an initial. It’s happened before - three Scouts, same name, no unique identifier.

Cubmaster or Webelos Den Leader – please bring a complete, accurate list of the Webelos going through the ceremony. We will need to be able to match names on the list to  names on the arrows.

Dress for the weather!  It’s winter – it could be cold. Or wet. Or both. Or neither.

Where will the ceremony be held?

At Bob Ray’s house – 719 Perry (281-342-9858). Cross the Brazos River bridge, immediately turn left, go to Perry and turn left –last house on the left.

Who can be invited to the ceremony?

This is a big achievement for the Webelos. Feel free to invite siblings, relatives and friends to attend. If your son knows which Troop he is going to join, invite the Scoutmaster from that Troop to be present to greet your Webelos as he crosses over into Boy Scouting.

Will my son receive his Arrow of Light Award at the ceremony?

No. Your Webelos will receive that award at a Pack ceremony.

May I take photos?

You may take video or still photos during the ceremony but only if you DO NOT USE FLASH or OTHER ARTIFICIAL LIGHT SOURCE. You must use the available light from the fire only. After the ceremony, if you would like your son to pose for a photo with the ceremony team, they will be happy to oblige - just ask – then you can use a flash.

We know you are proud of your Webelos, but please only use the photos for your personal enjoyment. You will not be getting a photo release from the ceremony team (or their parents), thus you are not permitted to publish it in the newspaper or other similar publication.

Any special requirements or advice regarding my son’s arrow?

His arrow has to be there – don’t forget it!
Use a plain, wooden target arrow – no sharp broadpoints, no hangy, dangly things.
Paint or colored tape is good for decorating the arrow used at this ceremony!
Each arrow must be identified with your son's FIRST AND LAST name and Pack number (see instructions above) and SECURELY tape it to the arrow with clear packing tape over the name, making sure the name can still be read.
Each arrow will be checked against your list and against our criteria described above.
If an arrow is deemed to not be in conformance, we ask that you remedy the deficiency on the spot. We won't have time for you to run home.

What to bring:

Your Webelos, in Class A uniform.
Your Webelos’ arrow (and a spare wooden one to donate, if you have it – we always need them).
A camera.
Lawn chairs.
It may be raining - Be Prepared!
It may be cold - bring a coat!
There could be bugs – bring repellant!
It will be dark - bring a flashlight (NOT permitted during the ceremony).
Bring a water bottle or two - the ceremony could go long.

Who are the guys in the Native American Outfits?

The AOL Crossover Ceremony is put on by Boy Scouts that are members of the Brazos Chapter of the Order of the Arrow. These Scouts work very hard to provide a quality experience for your Webelos – in fact, we like to think our Ceremony Teams are the best in the Sam Houston Council! Please be sure to thank the Ceremony Team afterwards.
